The traveling lamp...

Last week I bought a lamp. It was, of course, a HomeGoods steal that I did not need. But I loved it. My four year old daughter agreed that there had never been a lamp that was more "me". Alas, I brought it home and put it in the place I thought it would live and...nope. No good. Too high, color too harsh, just wrong. So I left it there for a couple of days thinking maybe it would grow on me, but I was fully prepared to return my lovely lamp. I tried it in the master bedroom and definitely no. And then inspiration struck! There is a small area by our front door that I have never really done anything with, I just had some things sitting there.

Ho hum, right?

I then remembered that I had never loved the table where the lamp was sitting in its current location. Are the pieces starting to fall into place? Yep, I moved the whole set-up into the entry way, added a couple of accessories, and viola!

This is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. Making this swap using things I already had in the house adds style and interest where there was just blah before. I was able to move the chair to a previously empty corner behind the door, which creates a cozy little nook for getting shoes on or off.

Obviously none of this is rocket science or design genius, and that is really the point of this post. Sometimes it just takes a little tweaking of things you already have to work with to create a focal point or just make a home work better. One of my favorite blogs Nesting Place calls this shopping the house. Shopping the house is a super helpful strategy I use all the time when staging to sell or just sprucing up a home. Do you have an area in your home that just seems like it needs a little pick-me-up? Try pulling a few items such as an unused lamp, baskets, pillows, vases or books from other parts of your home. Maybe bring in twigs, wild flowers, drift wood, pine cones or anything else you can find outside that catches your eye. Add your favorite scented candle and you have a space that feels new to you or draws attention to a nice feature in your home. Try it this weekend, or if you need a little help getting started call me!
